In conjunction with learning how to read and write the alphabet, Alif Baa introduces about 150 basic vocabulary words, including conventional forms of politeness and social greetings. Con este método se pretende que el alumno no diga nada que no haya oído antes y que no escriba nada que no haya leído. El alumno oye y aprende de oído el vocabulario nuevo (es por esto que los textos de las audiciones no aparecen escritos en el corpus principal de la lección). A continuación, se habla para practicar los nuevos conocimientos. Leemos después, y vemos escrito el vocabulario aprendido; y finalmente, escribimos lo que hemos aprendido a decir y leer. En cada lección se encuentra aspectos concretos de fonética y ortografía para ir incidiendo en cuestiones que nos parecen de especial dificultad y que conviene ir limando y matizando. También aparecen aspectos culturales relacionados con el día a día. No es cultura con mayúsculas: literatura, arte, etc.… sino aprender, simplemente, a saber estar.
